NYR ’22: How to save 1000kgs of CO2/year with small changes!

Yet another BE Networks New Year’s Resolution has been achieved and we steadily progress towards the completion of our sustainability plan.

Staying true to our goals, today we are more than happy to inform you that we already reduced our company’s waste related to food and drinks, by eliminating single-use products and by reinforcing reusable ones, among others.

Our changes, in detail:

–     No more single-use cups for coffee or water

–     No more single-use plates or cutlery

+    Reusable bottles and ceramic mugs for all employees

+    Reusable porcelain plates and stainless-steel flatware

+    More recycling bins in place

+    Optimized usage of the A/C and the heating system

These actions have as a tangible outcome more than 1000kg of CO2 saved from the atmosphere per year!

All you have to do is to join our movement!

Antwerp Sustainability Cup ’22

Past weekend, the first edition of the Antwerp Sustainability Cup took place @ “Galgenweel”, an idyllic lake located just next to the river Scheldt on walking distance from the historical city center of Antwerp.

The Antwerp Sustainability Cup is the successor of the Antwerp Snipe Cup, which was a proven success formula for the past 13 years attracting many international Snipe teams (Their Hall of fame consists of ex-Snipe World Champions, ex-Olympians, ex-Snipe Vice-European Champions etc.).

With the implementation of a new Cup, the concept also slightly changed and the Sailing Cup opened up for the Finn Class.

The Belgian Snipe Class (2-seater Dinghy) and Finn Class Belgium (1-seater ex- Olympic Dinghy) are currently the most active & popular adult sailing classes in Belgium. Together, they brought almost 50 boats to the racing area of the “Galgenweel Arena”!

With Sailors from Poland, Germany, the Netherlands & Belgium it turned out to be a very exciting race with a high level of competition.

Under the supervision of Race Officer Tomi Neuman, the Race Committee (RYCB Race & Rescue) managed to professionally execute 5 valid races on Saturday and another 4 on Sunday.

With 9-13 knots coming from southerly direction, the Race Committee chose to put out a “Trapezoid Course” with an inner loop run for the Finn Class and an Outer loop run for the Snipe Class.

This way, they managed to keep the two very highly competitive classes well apart so they would not interfere with each other. As always, the conditions were challenging. The lake is known for its shifty and gusty conditions after all.

For the Finn Class, it was Filip Willems (70 + (!!) ex-Olympian & well known sailing coach) that took the lead on Day 1 with 4 out of 5 races in top 3 positions. During Day 2 however, Belgian Champion Sigurd Vergauwe managed to get in the rhythm & went after the Cup.

Also in the Snipe Class there was a fierce competition with 26 Snipers at the start. With a southerly wind, the short upwind legs resulted in a hectic battle especially at the marks. The Team Jan Peeters – Nathalie Janssens, Belgian Champions, were dominant and sailed repetitive in the top of the fleet. They won the regatta followed by the brothers Everaert. Yannick Bongaerts and Frederico Sequeira completed the podium.

We wish to thank all participants, partners, volunteers & various Antwerp Sailing Clubs that closely worked together and made the first edition of this event happen.

We are looking forward to next years’ edition!

NYR ’22: from PVC tape to reinforced paper tape

At the beginning of the year, we presented to you our new year’s resolutions which support BE Networks’ sustainability plan. Staying true to our goals today we are more than happy to inform you that we already switched our tapes from PVC to reinforced paper, resulting to great benefits for the environment and our community:

To begin with, the manufacturer of our new reinforced paper tape is ISO14001 certified. The manufacturing process of paper versus plastic tape eliminates the use of hazardous chemic als, reduces energy consumption, and minimizes industrial waste.

Due to significantly increased strength, it requires 66% less tape per box than PVC tape, eliminating thousands of rolls of PVC tape per year. Its increased strength singificantly improves the safety products too, minimizing product damages during shipping.

As a result of reduced order volume from the manufacturer there will be less deliveries, along with less petrol and other materials required per delivery

Our new paper is also made from fully biodegradable and recyclable materials which means it can be left on box for recycling, eliminating costly chemical removal process for our customers.

Steadily but surely, we illustrate our pipeline of sustainability resolutions, and we will keep you updated for every single point! We are already working on achieving the rest of our goals for 2022, so stay tuned!

Damen Breskens Sailing Race: August 27-29th

During the upcoming weekend, our BE Networks Sailing Team “X-Bie” will participate in the “Damen Breskens Sailing Race”. This Regatta also counts for the “Open Dutch Championship IRC”.

The Race will take place from Friday 27th August up to Sunday 29th of August 2021 and registration is opened for the IRC, ORC, CR and Double-Handed Class segments. Our Sailing Team is racing in the IRC 2 segment.

The Race exists for almost 20 years now and traditionally attracts participants from the Belgian & Dutch Open North Sea circuits as well as some Rolex Fastnet Race participants.

The Breskens Sailing Regatta finds its popularity in the challenging racing conditions within a racing area which is strategically centrally located and therefore easily reachable for Dutch, Belgian & UK participants.

At the same time, the Regatta is also well known for its extensive “Après-sailing social program” with Duvel Moortgat taking care of the apéro on Friday for example.

The Racing Area is situated near the River Scheldt Estuary and the North Sea. Depending on the circumstances, the Race Committee shall choose between either “Windward-leeward” courses of approximately 1.5 hour or alternatively Coastal courses mainly around the existing navigation marks of the River Scheldt and the Southern North Sea. For the Open Dutch Championships IRC, it’s important that the length of the “Medium distance Coastal course” needs to be at least 15 Nautical Miles.

Next year, the European Championship IRC 2022 will be organized together with the Breskens Sailing Weekend. It will be the 7th edition of the European Championship IRC taking place over 4 days in late August 2022. The championship is expected to attract a record fleet of highly competitive IRC rated boats vying for the overall win and class honors. Therefore this regatta serves as a good preparation for next year’s event!

We’re looking forward for pictures to follow and wish our Team good luck to achieve some good results!
